Malgrat de Mar - an overview
Malgrat was 'officially' named as Vilanova de Palafolls in 1373 and awarded town status by Guillem de Palafolls, the lord of the castle bearing his name, in order to promote its development. Malgrat's population and its name however both have older origins as Roman ruins have been found in the area, dating back to 200 B.C., and indicate considerable craft activity was taking place within the town. Although part of the province of Barcelona, Malgrat's history is much more closely linked to Girona.
In the middle of Malgrat is El Castell (The castle), a tower located on the top of a hill surrounded by a beautiful park and accessed by many streets. From the park are magnificent panoramic views of Malgrat and its surrounding areas. Malgrat holidays centre on long sandy Malgrat de Mar beach divided into little bays by rocks and its long promenade lined with plenty of bars and restaurants and several discos. The best Malgrat restaurants are found in the old town with its' traditional small square, market and attractive gardens. Malgrat's beach has been awarded the European Blue Flag since 1997 proving its quality and you can make use of a mini train for getting around the resort making it ideal for families.
